A working synthesis
Reality is the residue of carving from a fuller field of possibility.
Preface
This document records a synthesis that emerged across several research sessions and conversations — many of them with Toobits, who has consistently surfaced the historical and textual examples that anchor my intuitions to source material, and one extended dialogue with Claude on May 13, 2026 in which the threads tied themselves into a coherent shape. The framework presented here belongs to no single tradition; it is offered in the spirit of expansion rather than replacement — across quantum physics, classical metaphysics, Vedantic cosmology, Kabbalistic creation theology, Christian mysticism, and the apophatic traditions that all of these share.
The doctrine has a name: participatory cosmology. It has an operating principle: Agape. What follows is the case.
The nine sections
Index of named concepts
- Participatory Cosmology The working name for the framework synthesized in this document.
- Subtractive Manifestation The proposition that the manifest world is carved from a fuller field of possibility rather than added to a void.
- Path Integral (Feynman) The quantum-mechanical formulation in which every possible path contributes, and reality is the residue of cancellation.
- Superposition & Decoherence The unmanifest state, and the mechanism by which it collapses to definite outcomes.
- Avyakta / Vyakta Vedantic terms for the unmanifest and the manifest.
- Neti, neti The Upanishadic apophatic formula — “not this, not that.”
- Tzimtzum The Lurianic Kabbalistic doctrine of divine contraction as the precondition for creation.
- Via Negativa & Aletheia Christian apophatic theology and Heidegger’s recovery of truth as unconcealment.
- Layered Agency The proposition that carving happens at every nested scale simultaneously, with the divine present in each.
- Two Birds, Chariot, Temple Three iconic images of indwelling divinity — the Upanishads, the Gita, and the Pauline epistles.
- Permission Gradient The calibration of divine carving activity by the soul’s openness; dynamic rather than fixed.
- Theosis The Eastern-Christian goal of human life, reinterpreted here as full permission granted to the indwelling divine.
- Indra’s Net The Avatamsaka Sutra’s image of total mutual interpenetration; the Hindu-Buddhist counterpart to entanglement.
- Body of Christ & Communion of Saints The Christian counterpart to Indra’s Net — mutual constitution in a single animating Spirit.
- Entanglement The quantum phenomenon in which separable wave functions cease to exist; the physical substrate of the net.
- Convenient Collapse The participatory framework’s name for the refusal to be carved — propagated mis-carvings transmitted through the net.
- Agape Love as the operating instruction of the entangled net — the chisel-stroke that releases form rather than imposes it.
